The Chillicothe Colonization Society met at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in the fall of 1836 and adopted resolutions calling on area residents to petition Congress in support of a plan to abolish slavery via a gradual process that included the removal and colonization of freed slaves on the west coast of Africa.
