Runaway Slave Advertisement for Nathan (1825)

This runaway slave advertisement appeared in the columns of the Village Register of West Union, Ohio, on 26 September 1825. From the notice we learn that Nathan escaped from a steamboat at the Mouth of Upper Twin Creek in Scioto County. J.B. Ory, who claimed to own Nathan, offered $150, plus "all reasonable charges ... to any person who will deliver him to ... Parish St. James, Acadia county, Louisiana."

At the time of his escape, Nathan is said to have been wearing "a blue round-a-bout coat, a black straw hat with several holes in it." Ory described Nathan as being "about 6 feet, one or two inches high; is a very good cook, and has been a Sailor; is supposed to be about 28 or 30 years of age."
