Conrad Gerlach operated the Portsmouth Brewery in the 1880s and was the source of the lawsuit that led to the creation of the nickname Boneyfiddle for Portsmouth's old First Ward neighborhood. During a hearing in the Mayor's Court, Gerlach's attorney, H. W. Farnham, questioned whether the public nuisance complaint was "bona fide." The rest, as they say, is history and legend.
