Roosevelt Lake Overlook Trail & the Mackletree Shelter House

With the completion of the Roosevelt Lake Dam in 1934, the Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees of Company 1545 from nearby Camp Roosevelt, built two shelter houses for visitors to the new Roosevelt Lake Park (what is now known as Shawnee State Park). The Mackletree Shelter House and the nearby trailhead for the Roosevelt Lake Overlook Trail has long attracted visitors and is an excellent example of what some call "Parkitecture," the distinctive CCC style of stone and rough hewn lumber built park structures.

Hike the Overlook Trail, which was constructed by a special all-black, World War I veterans unit of the CCC. Blazed and improved with stone steps and benches, this nature trail ascends through a hemlock and beech woods to a scenic overlook that allows vistors to see Turkey Creek and the Roosevelt Lake Spillway Bridge and Dam.
